  • Conscripts are cheered off from the capital, Asmara, as they leave to begin their mandatory 2-year National Service. .Eritrea emerged from a 30-year struggle for Independence only to slip back in to a bloody border war with its old adversary, Ethiopia. An estimated 100,000 soldiers from both sides died in the conflict.

  • Over 55,000 displaced Eritreans from the Adi-Quala area of Eritrea gather in the highlands near a village called Dbarwa, 25 miles from the capital Asmara. An estimated 750,000 Eritreans have been displaced since the latest round of fighting broke out on May 12th 2000 between Ethiopian and Eritrean forces. Ethiopian forces still control large areas of Eritrea, despite recent pledges to pull its forces out of occupied areas. The two countries have been locked in a bloody border war for the last 2 years in which an estimated 100,00 soldiers have died.

  • Police confront demonstrators with tear gas and batton charges outside the centre of Genoa, Italy. Banks, shops and cars were burnt and looted. The historic centre of the town had been sealed off for the G8 Summit. Up to 40 % of the city's population left the city and 15,000 police and army personnel sealed off the historic centre in anticipation of violent demonstrations. Up to 100,000 demonstrators protested against global capitalism and world poverty during the summit.

Banks, shops and cars were burnt and looted. They were forced out by the council after living there for 40 years. They accepted £10,000 to move on.   • UK. London. "Nue Rave" music and dance scene in the se0ne Club underneath London Bridge Railway Station. "Nue Rave" bands are guitar-led bands with a bit of dance music thrown in. Their audience are predominantly young, middle-class teenagers who borrow fashions from the 80s, 90s Rave scenes. Unlike the unofficial raves that use to take place, these events seem safe and tame by comparison. Photo shows the crowds listening and dancing to bands on stage.
